Learn from Failure
At some point, we have all made goal or promises and failed to follow through. It can be frustrating, but it should also be a learning experience. Pay attention to what works for you and what doesn’t. Try to spot where things went wrong. If you hate running or eating salad so much that it causes you to drop your new fitness program altogether — make a plan without those things!
They say the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. If one workout plan doesn’t work for you, then try something else you are excited about. Look at the variables that might have led to disappointment last time you started working toward a new goal, and adjust. Find workable solutions for your specific challenges and make them a part of your new program.
Understand Your Motivation
Personal fitness requires self-motivation, which means you can help yourself by taking the time to think about why you’re committing to this new goal. Why did you choose this specific milestone? What do you want to achieve? Do you want to be able to breathe easier when you run up the stairs, or keep up with your kids? No motivation is bad motivation, and once you understand what yours is, you can use it as a touchstone throughout your program. When you get tired and you want to quit, remembering why you chose this goal can help you power through to another day and another workout.
Track Your Progress
Some days will be better than others, and with a long-term goal like personal fitness, it can be hard to see the progress you’re making. Keeping track of small accomplishments and milestones can help you stay motivated and on the ball, as well as help you set new benchmarks of success. Every fitness program is like a competition against yourself, and when you can see how far you’ve come, you can reset your own standards. Try to do one more pull-up – or get a few inches closer to the bar – than you did the day before, and celebrate each victory.
Whether it’s from friends on social media or a certified personal trainer, you don’t have to tackle your fitness goals alone. Find a partner to make tough workouts more fun. Make your goals clear to someone who can hold you accountable. Ask for help from someone who can help you make the right decisions for you, your body, and your aspirations.
